Blending or Blanding of Computer Games into Pen and Paper Games.

Blending or Blanding of Computer Games into Pen and Paper Games.

Not the newest rant out there but at least this is my take on what the hell is happening to gaming. I am a Pen and Paper roleplayer, a computer gamer and also like a good game of chess or any other board game that takes my fancy. Perhaps I just have too much time on my hands but that is worthy of another discussion altogether. I started playing console based games when the Atari was first out and Space Invaders were one of the better titles on the machine, then I started playing Dungeons and Dragons (Basic Box – the red one, then the Expert Box.. I then graduated onto AD&D, Rolemaster,Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, Cyberpunk etc) All the time I kept up with computer/console gaming.

Over the last 10 years I have noticed more and more concepts of computer gaming coming into the role playing sphere and taking over it, especially when you hear someone write about story arcs coming to a conclusion with a boss battle. GAH! The whole premise of roleplaying is not just some glorified platformesque shooter where the accumulation of kills and stuff is the be all and end all. Therein lies the problem too much has gone from the actual game where you may be defined by skill points/levels etc but you are more than just that you are a character.. not someone who must face certain trials to get to the boss and defeat the evil Big Chicken (please substitute dragon or other baddie) The aim is to roleplay. Be the character…

Perhaps it’s more an age thing on my part but after reading the much hyped 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook I was mortified by the blandness. In a search for selling more product it would seem that Wizards turned D&D into a pen and paper version of World of Warcraft – shame on you. In a few places it espouses that the aim of the game is the accumulation of loot.. so hey lets shoot the drama straight away.. you mean stories.. pah.. you just need several fights leading to a sub boss fight or two then a big boss show off… erm.. no.. That just takes it back into the realms of the powergamer who sees everything in the build. It’s a heap of crap, sad, and just a shame that the game had to go that way.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that other games have started to get a much greater following due to D&Ds new venture notably World of Darkness and Pathfinder.

Hat of Many Colours

Originally posted on Barrok’s Tower

Hat of Many Colours

Code — COLORSPRAY-675-WIZ-HAT
This pointy looking plasti hat has a clear plastic dome on top of it filled with many different coloured LEDs. There is a wire hanging down from the hat itself which goes to a hand held control panel with two buttons and a dial. One button says “On/Off”, the other says “Strobe” the dial is marked “Intensity” and is numbered from 1 to 10. When switched on the LEDs come on simultaneously illuminating the area around the wearer — each increment of intensity increasing the illumination by 20 meters. All seems normal until “strobe” is pressed — suggested random strobe effects

Roll d6

1. All are blinded in the area until it seems unfunny
2. All bots in the are have their bot brains reprogrammed through optical light waves — they go Frankenstein and try to kill the hat wearer — then take the hat to free more bots.
3. A leprechaun appears trying to find the source of the new rainbow and leaves the character with a pot of gold.
4. All humans in the area lose control of their mutant powers including the hat wearer and all manifest them all at once.
5. A rip in space/time causes Azathoth to appear and dance a merry old jig for you.
6. You are bombarded by tiny bits of hard candy and so is everyone else in 30 meters — attack 10 — damage S3M — And if anyone is maimed they have lost an eye. A voice intones “Taste The Rainbow”

Barrok’s Tower — The Saga!

Well after giving up the place so I had more time to myself, I am now the technical person there updating the forum and helping out copying and pasting posts from the old broken forum to the new not broken one. To be honest it has been nice to be busy for the last week as my back has been a pile of crap, so anything to take my mind off it is a bonus. Now I have got about 6–8 mods I have to hack into the place and a few hundred or so original posts to plonk in.

At least when I am bored I can mess about in the chatroom adding more mp3s.. thinking of seeing what a flash server software is like and if it costs anything at all.. have to add die roller to it as well.. damn I’m getting myself more work here! I am hopefully going to be doing tomorrow the massive BBCode hack which will include a lot more BBCode for members to use and I think it displays it in a word type navigation bar, tonight I will just upload all the files and connect them in the morning. JOY
